Pallet load stability becomes even more critical as shipping volume increases and temperatures rise during late spring and summer. Many businesses experience a spike in product damage during this period, not because of the product itself, but because loads are not properly secured for more demanding transit conditions.
As freight moves through longer routes, hotter environments, and busier carrier networks, small weaknesses in pallet structure become bigger problems. Loads shift, boxes compress, and what seemed stable in the warehouse can fail during transportation.
Why Pallet Load Stability Matters More in Warmer Months
Understanding pallet load stability is essential when preparing shipments during high-demand seasons. Heat can soften certain packaging materials, reduce the effectiveness of stretch film tension, and increase the likelihood of load movement.
At the same time, increased shipping volume means more handling, tighter stacking in trailers, and less margin for error. If a pallet is not properly built and secured, it is more likely to shift, lean, or collapse before reaching its destination.
One of the most common issues is inconsistent wrapping. Stretch film that is applied unevenly or with insufficient tension fails to provide the containment force needed to hold cartons together. This becomes more noticeable during longer transit times.
Another factor is box strength. Corrugated boxes that perform well under normal conditions may begin to compress when exposed to higher temperatures combined with stacking pressure. This can weaken the overall structure of the pallet.
Improving stability starts with building the pallet correctly from the base. Heavier items should always be placed at the bottom, with weight distributed evenly across the pallet. Uniform box sizes help create a more stable structure, reducing gaps that lead to shifting.
Proper containment is equally important. Using the correct stretch film gauge and applying it consistently across the entire load ensures that cartons remain tightly secured. For heavier or high-value shipments, adding strapping can provide additional reinforcement.
Avoiding pallet overhang is another critical detail. When boxes extend beyond the edges of the pallet, they are more exposed to impact and compression, increasing the risk of damage.
